2002: KING OF THE ROAD Bulletin The following information has been mailed to all registered 2002 King of the Road owners and is provided here for any 2002 owner who may not have received a letter:
We have recently discovered that some of our 2002 model year fifth wheels have an improperly fused 12-volt circuit. The circuit involved is circuit number 10, which controls the electric waste tank valves. In some units, a 20-amp fuse protects circuit number 10; this is incorrect, the fuse should be a 5-amp. Please inspect your fuse panel as soon as possible. If there is a 20-amp fuse installed in circuit 10, replace it immediately with a 5-amp fuse. After you have replaced the 20-amp fuse, if necessary, please send notification to: King of the Road National Service Center, Box 553, Russell, KS 67665. Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, or if we can help in any way, please call us at 1-800-255-0521. |

To all owners of Full Time or older rigs which may have high mileage.
I recently did a tire inspection of our 33 foot King and was shocked to see the front of my rear spring resting on the frame. The shackles on the rocker were completely ripped out of their mounting on the spring. I found the center hole of the rocker elongated and the nylon bushings worn in two. We were warned of this possibility at last years Rayne Rally by Gary Wheeler of Mor/ryde at a seminar.
Since we were parked for a period of time while visiting a relative in Oregon, I removed the rocker, found the other two shackles nearly worn through and took them to an RV service center to order new parts. Replacement of both side was the only option.
There are two kits available for this purpose, made by Dexter Axle, standard, as original or heavy duty. Both come with brass bushings. I ordered the heavy duty as the shackles are nearly double the thickness of original and all moving parts can be greased.
Be sure to take the numbers off the existing rocker when ordering as there is a smaller version that is available. (Speaking of the rocker)
We were lucky, the final break occurred as we backed into this present spot. On the highway it could have been disastrous. I highly recommend having your shackles checked by someone knowledgeable. I know of no way to check the shackles with pressure on them. Maybe someone in the club has a method.
Replacement was a relatively easy if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, but multiple hydraulic jacks are necessary and extreme caution must be used to support the trailer as both wheels must be removed on one side to do this job. I had access to heavy blocks, lowered the front of the trailer as much as possible, placed the blocks just ahead of the skid wheels in the rear, raised the front high and the wheels were nearly off the ground.
Under no circumstances try to remove all four wheels at the same time.
